Established in 2012, the North East Victorian Wine Challenge (NEVWC) was created to celebrate and elevate the wines of the North East Victorian Wine Zone (NEWZ) — bringing together the five distinct Geographical Indications (GIs) of the region: Alpine Valleys, Beechworth, Glenrowan, King Valley, and Rutherglen.

This unique regional wine show is not just a friendly competition — it’s a spirited showcase of the extraordinary diversity, depth, and character that defines winemaking in North East Victoria. From the cool alpine slopes to the sun-soaked valleys, this region offers an unmatched tapestry of terroirs, micro climates, and heritage — making it a natural home for classic varietals, alternative styles, and world-class fortifieds.

  • Alpine Valleys is known for its cool climate elegance and pristine, high-altitude vineyards that lend finesse to aromatic whites and refined reds.
  • Beechworth brings intensity and complexity, with granitic soils producing some of Australia’s most sought-after Chardonnay and Shiraz.
  • Glenrowan delivers bold, structured reds and historic fortifieds shaped by warm days and rich, deep soils.
  • King Valley is the home of Australian Prosecco and a known leader in alternative Italian varietals like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and Barbera.
  • Rutherglen, world-renowned for its legendary Muscat and Topaque, also produces robust reds with heritage and power.

After a brief hiatus during 2020–2022 due to COVID and logistical challenges, the Challenge returned triumphantly in 2023, reaffirming its place as a key fixture on the Australian wine show calendar.

Get Ready for the next North East Victorian Wine Challenge

Preparations are now in full swing for the 2025 edition, with judging (for 2025 and 2026) to take place in Beechworth from November 19–21. Wines from across the five regions will go head-to-head in a celebration of regional character, innovation, and excellence.

This year’s show will culminate at the Award ceremony on the afternoon of Friday November 21 – held at Judging HQ, the Beechworth Memorial Hall, on Ford Street. This will be for exhibitors, but also open to the public where a $10 (cash only) entry gets you access to those wines submitted for the NEVWC.

Whether you’re a seasoned entrant or submitting for the first time, this is an opportunity to be part of a show that proudly represents the past, present, and future of North East Victorian wine.
